Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised his state's ability to "secure the border" between the US and Mexico on Monday nearly an hour before dozens of suspected illegal immigrants were found dead inside a semi-truck.

Abbott blamed Biden for what he referred to as "deadly open border policies" after the discovery of at least 48 dead bodies.

Abbott said that the deaths were on Biden.

At 5 p.m. local time, Abbott praised "Operation Lone Star," a multi-agency effort to stop the flow of drugs, weapons and people into Texas.

Over 265,500 migrants have been captured, over 16,400 people have been arrested, and over 13,800 felonies have been reported, according to Abbot.

Abbot's office said in June that "Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration's refusal to secure the border." Due to President Biden's open border policies, every individual who is arrested or caught with drugs would have made their way into communities across Texas and the nation.

Less than an hour later, authorities were called to a rural road where the bodies were found. Three people are in custody and more than a dozen others were hospitalized after the discovery.

The deaths show the consequences of Biden's refusal to enforce the law, according to Abbott.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the White House press secretary hit back at Abbott's claim, saying that the border is closed and people are trying to make dangerous journeys using smuggled goods.

The migration crisis has become a focal point of Abbott's reelection campaign.

The White House and Abbott's office did not respond to Insider's questions.

According to US Customs and Border Protection data, there has been a higher number of encounters at the southern border over the last three years.
