New-to-science toad species discovered on university campus in Peru

One can step out from one's house and discover a new species in the Amazon. He has discovered a new species of toad for the second time.

When I went to the new UNAP campus at Zungarococha near Iquitos, I looked into the forest next to the future science building. The toads were moving through the litter. When I picked up the individuals, I realized they have a different shape to their heads and bodies. They could be new species, that's what this gave me.

He and his colleagues analysed the toad and another that was found in the Iquitos region and determined that they were both new species. The first toad to be found on the UNAP campus has been renamed Rhinella unapensis. There are two leaf litter toads on the Amazon floor.

The Iquitos region is already known to have a high diversity of salamanders. Iquitos has a green landscape due to it's location in the Amazon. There is a lot of different species around the city.

The area has a remarkable amphibian diversity that is threatened by pollution and illegal gold mining.
