A well- connected display industry analyst has already reacted to the reports of Apple releasing an iPad mini with 120Hz ProMotion with skepticism.
Ross Young, an analyst with Display Supply Chain Consultants, said he would be surprised if it was true, given that the iPad mini doesn't work with ProMotion.
The iPad mini 6 has a backplane technology. A-si is the go to display tech for its low cost and simple production process.
Young notes that Apple's iPad Pro models use Oxide liquid crystal display panels. For their ability to provide higher contrasts, refresh rates, and resolutions, oxide LCD technologies are preferred in premium smartphones.
I would be surprised since it is currently an a-Si LCD which isn't compatible with ProMotion. Only their Pro models support ProMotion as they use an Oxide LCD. — Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) June 28, 2022
Suggestions that Apple could possibly adopt ProMotion for a next- generation iPad mini began to receive attention after the phenomenon was identified. The slanted/wobbly text effect can be seen when scrolling through text on the iPad mini 6.
There is a small delay between when the lines at the top and bottom are refreshed and when the lines at the bottom are refreshed. This behavior can be seen more clearly on the iPad mini.
There have been rumors of an iPad mini with ProMotion before. There is a claim that Apple is testing a display for a future iPad mini. LeaksApplePro, who has no track record for accurate Apple leaks or rumors, is believed to be behind the revival of the 120Hz iPad mini rumor.
