Three more pieces of the esteemed mecha franchise had been added to the platform as part of its ongoing expansion. It has been available on DVD for several years at this point, and has occasionally been made available to stream in limited time windows on the Gundam.Info Youtube channel.
In spite of the merger between Funimation and Crunchyroll, ZZ is not on the streaming service. With Kamille comatose after the events of the series, Judau, who makes a living harvesting and selling scrap from damaged mobile suits, suddenly finds himself and his friends thrust into the conflict with the remnants of the space colony.
ZZ Gundam starts off very different to its predecessors in the franchise, which is one of the reasons why it's a misunderstood reputation. Much of the main cast of the series were left dead or injured, and the victory was not as clear-cut as the one in the original Gundam. ZZ, meanwhile, opens with a lot of comedy hijinks and farce, with both protagonists and antagonist groups alike getting a bunch of non-traditional, kooky characters. The previous protagonists Kamille and Amuro were more interested in fighting other people's conflicts for them. ZZ never loses his anti-authority abrasiveness as he grows and matures as a pilot, making for some really interesting commentary on the franchise's systems of governance. He loves punching people in the face.
After ZZ's conclusion, the franchise's immediate continuation, Char's Counterattack, largely ignores the events and characters of ZZ and Zeta to focus on the conflict between Amuro and Char Az. If you have been avoiding the series for its silly tone, now is a good time to give it a good re-evaluation.
