Defending champion Novak Djokovic began his quest for a fourth successive Wimbledon title with a hard fought four set win over South Korean Kwon Soon-woo under the Centre Court roof.

If he succeeds in winning a seventh title at SW19, he'll move into second place on the all-time men's record.

The top seed from Serbia defeated the world number 81.

The win is the 22nd in a row for the former world number one.

It also means that he is the first man or woman to win 80 singles matches at all four Grand Slam tournaments.

"This court is truly special, for me it has always been the court I dreamed of playing and winning and all my childhood dreams came true here so it's an honor and pleasure to be back on Centre Court."

He said, "This sport has given me everything, I owe a lot to the sport and I love it still."

The love for this sport still burns in me and I try to always play my best tennis at the Grand Slams and deliver my best tennis at the best courts. We've got to get to 100 now that we're at 80.

Djokovic pulls through as Kwon rises to Centre Court occasion

As tradition dictates, the defending men's singles champion was elected to begin proceedings on Centre Court.

The world number three is the favourite to retain the title once again in the absence of top-ranked Daniil Medvedev, who was banned from Wimbledon after the All England Club denied entry to Russian and Belarusian players.

He will face either Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis or Pole Kamil Majchrzak in the second round.

The top seed was stunned with a break to 15 and then surrendered just a single point as he was defeated by the young Korean, who went on to win the match and the title.

After breaking back, he served out the first set with a five-game streak.

After losing the first set, Kwon responded with a break for 3-1 in the second and then held his serve to level the contest.

Encouraged by the crowd as he continued to apply pressure in the third, the South Korean was able to get a break point in the fifth game, but he couldn't convert it.

After saving a break point in the opening game, the Serb asserted himself in the fourth set.

He earned a record-breaking win at SW19 and came through a tough first-round match.
