They shouldn't have to justify why they want an abortion. Rape and incest make it more unjust to deny pregnant people of their right to choose.

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn abortion rights is causing some Republicans to try to justify their support of the decision.

Rep. Greg Murphy, a Republican who represents North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District, claimed that no one forced anyone to have sex.

Sometimes forcing other people to have sex can lead to an unwanted pregnancy. According to research from the CDC, nearly one in five women have been raped. Rape is a victim of many men.

Murphy is a doctor as well as a congressman. He is a urologist who attended medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill and has held several prominent board positions.

In a perfect world, sexual assault survivors wouldn't have to decide whether or not to have a baby because they wouldn't have been raped. That is not what we live in. It is shameful and unbecoming of any public official, let alone one who pretends to use his medical expertise to advocate for his constituency, to ignore this reality. It shouldn't matter if someone was forced to have sex or not. If a person wants to have a baby, they shouldn't have to give birth unless they want to.

The reality is that most North Carolinians and Americans aren't buying it. A majority of Americans don't like the Supreme Court's decision A strong majority of voters say it makes them more likely to vote in November, with more than half saying they would vote for a candidate who supports restoring the right to an abortion.

Republicans are aware of that. The political reality is that this is not an issue that helps them and they are responding poorly. They are showing us who they are.
