The US Supreme Court repealed the landmark ruling of 1973, known as "Rose v Wade", on June 24th. The decision was called a tragic error by the Supreme Court.

When the draft was leaked, the decision was made. Protesters took to the streets in Washington DC and across the US after the official ruling by the court.

The Supreme Court upheld a Mississippi abortion ban in a 6-3 vote. They voted to overturn the decision to allow abortion. Justice Samuel Alito said in the majority opinion that the constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each state from regulating abortion.

Each state will have to make a decision. In some states a law banning the procedure in the case of Wade being overturned has already taken effect, while in others it will be enacted after 30 days. Some states have abortion restrictions that were in place before 1973.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, there are 26 states that are certain or likely to ban abortion completely.

The justices dissented because of the loss of a fundamental constitutional protection for American women.

Their opinion states that the decision undermines a woman's bodily autonomy.

There are exceptions to the abortion ban in 13 states, but most don't include exceptions for rape or incest.

Sixty-one percent of people in the US think abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances, according to a survey conducted by the research center. If the health or life of the woman is in danger, 46 per cent of those who say abortion should be against the law say an exception should be made.

"Abortion is still going to be accessible in nearly half the country and we need to make sure patients are aware of that." A patient came to our clinic from Florida and as she was about to fall asleep she expressed fear and panic. After getting a notification about the decision, she asked if she could still have her procedure.

There are doctors and groups that are dedicated to getting people to states where abortions are still legal and giving them medication for self-managed abortions. We will not give up, we are devastated, but we will continue.

In response to the historic ruling, the US attorney general said that crossing state lines to get an abortion is still legal, as is the ability of people or organizations to inform and counsel others about reproductive care available in other states.

A commonly used medication for abortion is still legal according to him. The medication Mifepristone has been approved by the FDA. States can ban Mifepristone if they disagree with the FDA's opinion about its safety and effectiveness. In December, the FDA allowed access to the drug via the post and through a video conference.

The US has an abortion rate that is growing. In 2020 the US abortion rate increased for the first time in 30 years, to nearly 1 million abortions. More than one in three of these abortions were done in states that are likely to ban abortion.
