A Beefeater is being hired by the Tower of London to defend the crown jewels. It will take a long military career to get the job.

The position of Yeoman Warder is being advertised by the Tower of London's parent group Historic Royal Palaces, which also manages Prince William and his wife Kate's palace.

Lucky candidates will be very rare. The applicants must have been in the military for at least 22 years and have a suitable level of fitness.

A group of 32 men and women who served as the Queen's bodyguards are looking for a new member. The first suggestion to move to the Tower was made by Henry VII.

The job specification states that Beefeaters must prevent damage to, or theft of, articles or other property within the Tower of London.

The position will require the successful candidate to lead the Tower's popular daily tours, welcome and assist visitors on site and bring the history and stories of the Tower.

Estimates put the value of the Crown Jewels at $4 billion because they are not insured. They were moved to the Tower after Thomas Blood tried to steal them.

A toast of port is served in an 18th-century pewter bowl during a centuries-old ceremony. The Chief Yeoman Warder must say "may you never die a Yeoman Warder" to all new recruits.

Yeoman Warders can get a free bottle of Beefeater Gin on their birthday.
