Mark Cavendish has won a record-equalling 34 stages of the Tour de France

After edging a three-way sprint to the line, Mark Cavendish won the British National Road Championship.

In Scotland, Cavendish held off the challenge from under-23 rider SamWatson and Alex Richardson.

He's going to miss the Tour de France with Quick Step-AlphaVinyl.

He equaled the record of 34 Tour de France stage wins.

He said after crossing the line in Castle Douglas that he could show why he wasn't going on the Tour.

"I am going so much better than last year, and you know what happened last year at the Tour," Cavendish said.

I have not received a call from the team. I am trying to stay positive, I know if I go on the Tour, I will win.

In the women's race, 19-year-old Alice Towers claimed her first road race title, one minute and 13 seconds ahead of her opponent.
