Matthew Wolff, whose rise at the start of his PGA Tour career was as surprising as his struggles in recent months, is the latest player to defect.

Wolff is going to play in the first golf tournament in the US at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland. There will be an announcement on Monday.

Wolff, whose unconventional swing made him one of the most popular young players on tour, tied for 40th in the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. It might have been his last start on the PGA Tour as commissioner Jay Monahan has indefinitely suspended members as soon as they tee it up in a golf tournament.

Wolff left the PGA Tour.

Wolff, a star player at Oklahoma State, turned pro in June and won less than a month later at the 3M Open. Wolff made an eagle putt from off the green on the 72nd hole to win the match. He was second at the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot after tying for fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship.

Wolff has had a hard time over the past two seasons. He took a break from golf in 2021. He finished in a tie for 15th at the U.S. Open. He's missed the cut in seven of his 12 starts this season and hasn't finished in the top 25. He is 74th in the official world golf ranking.

The No. 2 ranked amateur in the world is expected to be announced by LIV Golf. On Sunday, he said that he was leaving Oklahoma State and going pro. He said that he was able to not turn down the opportunity.

It is a train that passes once in a lifetime.
