Boris Johnson said on Sunday that allowing Putin to succeed in his invasion of Ukraine would be catastrophic.

Hours after Russia launched more missile attacks in Kyiv, Johnson made the remarks on CNN.

The British leader told Jake Tapper that Western nations needed to maintain their resolve in assisting Ukraine in their efforts to stave off further advances by Russian military forces.

"I would just say to people in the United States that this is something that America historically does and has to do, and that is to step up for peace and freedom and democracy," he stated. The consequences for the world are catastrophic if we allow Putin to get away with it.

The Group of Seven world leaders, led by Johnson, arrived in Germany's Bavarian Alps this weekend to continue mapping out their approach to dealing with Russia's aggression.

According to The Washington Post, the G7 will bar gold imports from Russia in order to cut off another revenue source that could be used to fund their invasion.

As energy costs rise around the world, G7 leaders are having to contend with their resolve in maintaining sanctions against Russia, as consumers and workers have grown frustrated by higher costs compared to a year ago.

During the conflict, Johnson visited Kyiv twice to meet with Zelenskyy.

Allowing Russia to succeed would create more challenges in the future according to the British Prime Minister.

He told CNN that he could see the consequences of his actions. It is disastrous for democracy and for the independence of countries, but also for economic stability.

The price of funding for Ukraine from Western nations was worth it.

The political opposition in Russia has been cracked down, allowing Putin to pursue his ambitions.

He asked if he thought that Putin would have launched an invasion of another country if he'd had people to argue with.

Despite the political turmoil caused by the Capitol riot, Johnson did not feel that American democracy was in danger.

He told Tapper that the reports of the death of democracy in the US are overstated. America is a shining city on a hill for me.
