According to a new report from Mark Gurman, Apple's mixed reality headset could be powered by the M2 processor. According to Gurman, the most recent version of the device has a base M2 chip and 16 gigabytes of RAM.

The supply chain analyst had previously predicted that Apple's headset would have a single processor with the capabilities of an M1 chip and an additional lower-end processor dedicated to handling data from the device's sensors. A multiple chip setup was rumored in an earlier report from The Information.

If Apple was planning to use the M1 as the headset's primary processor, it only makes sense for it to use the most recent iteration of its in-house chip. When compared to the older M1 chip, the new M2 chip has an 18 percent fasterCPU and 35 percent fasterGPU.

Gurman predicts that the device will include 16GB of RAM, which would make it more powerful than the all-in-one Metaquest 2. When Apple finally releases its headset, it will be interesting to see how it compares to Meta's virtual reality headset, which comes with 6 gigabytes of ram.

There have been signs that Apple's headset is close to being ready. The board of directors was given the chance to try out the headset. The operating system RealityOS has appeared in Apple's code and in a trademark application.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook told interviewers at China Daily that they would see what they have to offer in mixed reality.
