Bryce Harper frustrated while exiting game after being plunked (1:06)

After being hit in the hand by a pitch, BryceHarper voiced his frustration. There is a time and a place for this.

12:27 AM ET

The Philadelphia outfielder broke his left thumb when he was hit by a 97 mph pitch from the San Diego pitcher.

The National League's Most Valuable Player will be out for a long time. In the next few days, he will be evaluated further.

"I've never had a hand injury like this before," saidHarper, who was wearing a splints on his thumb. I never broke anything in my life. I'm new to this and I'm going to see the specialist in Philadelphia. I will see another specialist if necessary.

The pitch from Snell hitHarper on the outside of the left hand, as he checked his swing. After falling to the ground, he was in pain as he held his hand while on his knees with the help of the Philadelphia head trainer.

It would have hit me in the face. "I don't break bones in my face." I can take 98 to the face but not 97 to the thumb.

The general manager said it was too early to say if surgery will be necessary. He didn't know what type of injuryHarper had or where it happened.

When he returns to Philadelphia, he will see a doctor.

He will be placed on the injured list. He was hit in the face and I was worried. I was worried immediately because he is a tough guy and he left the field.

As he was near the Philadelphia bench, he yelled at the Padres' starter and gestured with his hand at the pitcher. The man shouted back at the person. Many of the fans at the park booedHarper after he shouted at the pitcher.

After acknowledging that the pitcher didn't mean to hit him, he said, "I know, I know."

Harper said it wasn't heated. It was just a bad situation. I know there was no ill will behind that because I've been playing against him for a long time. It's part of the game. He is both a player and a person. I wish him the best, and I told him to keep throwing the inside fastball because it sets the Slider really well.

The two are having a good time.

I felt terrible hitting him. He knows I don't do that. We've dealt with it. I can understand why he would be upset. I hit him. I hope he makes a quick recovery and gets back out there.

The two of them were going to see each other after the game.

In Philadelphia's 4-2 win,Harper, who was the designated hitter, was replaced by a different player.

He isn't replaceable on an individual basis, but other people are going to have to step up. We will attempt to get someone here on Sunday.

In 64 games this season,Harper is hitting.318 with 15 home runs, 48 RBIs and a.984 OPS despite a small tear in his right elbow that has prevented him from playing the outfielder since April 16. He tried to avoid Tommy John surgery by getting a blood injection.

He doesn't know how long he will be out. I hope he will come back soon. There are still many good hitters in the lineup. Last year, the Braves won the World Series.
