The rapid spread of monkeypox doesn't represent a global health emergency at the moment, according to the World Health Organization.
The director general of the World Health Organization called monkeypox an evolving health threat and urged governments around the world to step up their vigilance.
The WHO formed an emergency committee to figure out what level of threat monkeypox poses to the international community. More than 3000 monkeypox cases have been identified in more than 50 countries since May.
The committee considered whether or not to raise the WHO's highest alert level in response to the outbreak. The World Health Organization considers Covid-19 and Polio to be international public health emergencies.
Tedros said the outbreak raises serious concern because it is spreading quickly in countries where it is not normally seen. In West and Central Africa, monkeypox has spread at a low level. Almost all of the cases reported around the world are in Europe.
Tedros said in a press release Saturday that the current outbreak is particularly concerning because of the rapid, continuing spread into new countries and regions and the risk of further, sustained transmission into vulnerable populations.
The health of people in Africa and around the world is at risk due to the lack of research on monkeypox.
Monkeypox can be spread through close physical contact with someone who has the disease. If a person has a disease in their throat or mouth, the virus can be spread. Monkeypox is not thought to spread through aerosol particles.
Respiratory droplets fall to the ground quickly, while aerosol particles stay in the air for a long time. The reason Covid-19 is so infectious is because it spreads through aerosol particles.
There is a milder case of monkeypox than there is ofpox. In two to four weeks, most people are back to normal.
Gay and bisexual men who have had sex with more than one partner are most affected by the monkey outbreak. The majority of the patients that disclosed demographic information are men. According to the WHO, the majority of them are men who have sex with men.
There have been 142 confirmed or suspected monkexpox cases in the U.S., according to the CDC. Ahead of Pride month, health officials in the U.S. wanted to raise awareness about how the virus spreads and what symptoms to look for so people can protect themselves. Even though men who have sex with men are at a higher risk of contracting monkeypox, anyone can catch it through close physical contact.
The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to the flu. There is a rash on the body. When people have a rash, they are most infectious.
According to the CDC, some patients in the current outbreak have developed a rash only on the genitals or anus before they show any flulike symptoms. In some cases, patients had no flulike symptoms at all.
The U.S. has a number of vaccines and treatments to fight diseases. Jynneos is a vaccine that can be given to people over the age of 18. Jynneos is generally recommended by the CDC over ACAM2000. ACAM2000 can have serious side effects.
The World Health Organization does not recommend mass vaccinations to stop monkeypox at the moment. People who are at high risk of being exposed to the virus can get a vaccine.
The emergency designation has only been used six times by the international health agency. The last time a global health emergency was declared by the WHO was in the year 2019. In addition, the agency declared global emergencies for the H1N1 swine flu in 2009, the Zika virus in 2016 and the diseases of the last two years.
