Mars used to be a different place.
NASA's rover recently rumbled by evidence of an ancient watery world on the red planet. A car-sized robot snapped a picture of a rock that looked like it had been stacked. The space agency wrote that the rock may have formed in a streambed or pond.
There is a place in the foothills of Mount Sharp where the streams and ponds used to be. Some of the material was deposited in piles.

Evidence shows that Mars was warm and moist enough to harbor large lakes.
The Peservance rover is on a journey through the planet's Jezero Crater, where NASA believes there was a lake and a river. Even though the water is gone, the robot has equipment that is meant to look for signs of life that could have been on a different Mars.
