The Women's National Basketball Players Association urged people to vote after the Supreme Court overturned a woman's right to an abortion. It's because they do.
The WNBPA said that the decision shows a branch of government that is out of touch with the country.
When we vote, we must connect the dots to policies and legislation that align with our values.
The Supreme Court voted on Friday to overturn a landmark decision that legalized abortion in the United States. It was supported by the court's conservative majority after the leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicating the court was prepared to take this momentous step.
In the final opinion, Alito wrote that the original 1973 decision on abortion and the 1992 decision must be reversed.
The courts do not have the authority to regulate abortion, according to Alito. It's up to the states.
The constitution doesn't give a right to abortion. Alito said that the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people.
Supreme Court justices joined the majority. The Mississippi law that banned abortion after 15 weeks was upheld by the Chief Justice, but he didn't vote to overturn it.
The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in a majority of the states.
"It's just incredibly disheartening. There are an infinite amount of reasons why a woman chooses to do what she does with her body or what they do with their body -- none of which are anybody else's business." USWNT star Megan Rapinoe
Three of the court's liberal justices wrote in a joint dissent that the decision would bring "sorrow" for the many millions of American women who will lose a fundamental constitutional protection. abortion ban could lead to higher rates of maternal mortality while eviscerating rights to reproductive freedom for everyone
In September, a number of prominent women athletes, including soccer star Megan Rapinoe, signed a friend-of-the-court brief to the justices. There were 26 Olympians and 73 professional athletes in the group. They said that abortion rights have helped the growth of women's sports and that they were concerned that future athletes would suffer if those protections were taken away.
Rapinoe said the ruling is out of touch with the desires of the country.
The pursuit of happiness and liberty is being attacked in this instance. It's just really sad. There are so many reasons why a woman chooses to do what she does with her body or what she does with her body without anyone else's permission.
Lindsey Horan is a teammate of Rapinoe's on the U.S. women's soccer team. I don't feel like this is going in the right direction.
The National Women's Soccer League stated that the ruling "denies individuals in this country the full liberty and equality that is the cornerstone of a just society"
Human rights include productive rights. Our work is not done until everyone has the same rights. We will continue to speak up.

The NBA and theWNBA issued a joint statement.
Women should be able to make their own decisions regarding their health and future, and freedom should be protected, according to the NBA and WNBA. Ensuring our employees have access to reproductive health care regardless of their location is one of the things we will advocate for.
A number of athletes decried the ruling on social media.
The decision will not end abortion and it is sad in the US.
At her pre-Wimbledon news conference Saturday, Coco Gauff expressed her disappointment with the Supreme Court ruling but said she hopes people will continue to speak out.
"Obviously I feel bad for future women and women now, but I also feel bad for those who protested for this, I don't know how many years ago, but they're still alive to see that decision reversed," Gauff said. I don't think history is stopping. I feel like we're almost going backwards because I feel like having this decision reversed makes me feel like I'm reading a book.
Carol Hutchins, the winningest coach in college softball history, said she got the news from her phone on Friday.
Hutchins said that it was clear that it was coming. Human rights in this country are under attack and women's rights are one of them. I'm concerned for the rights of people.
Josh Hart wrote a letter to the women in this country. I apologize.
