Tina Charles and the Phoenix Mercury parted ways in a surprise move.
The Mercury and Charles had agreed to a divorce.
Jim Pitman said that it was best for both parties to leave at this time. Our season has not gone according to our plan due to circumstances both in and out of our control, and we will continue to pursue all avenues for improvement.
Charles was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Mercury, who have been without their center since she was arrested in Russia. The Mercury have dealt with a number of injuries and illnesses in their first season under the guidance of their new head coach.
Charles was signed to a one-year contract by the Mercury. The Washington Mystics' Charles was the leading scorer in the WNBA in 2021. She didn't play in the league in 2020.
Charles played for the Connecticut Sun and the New York Knicks from 2010 to 2019. She is an eight-time All-Star and three-time Olympian. She has not won a title in the NBA.
