The Mercury and Charles had agreed to a divorce.

Charles was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Mercury, who have been without their center since she was arrested in Russia. The Mercury have dealt with a number of injuries and illnesses in their first season under the guidance of their new head coach.
Charles was signed to a one-year contract by the Mercury. The Washington Mystics' Charles was the leading scorer in the WNBA in 2021. She didn't play in the league in 2020.
Charles played for the Connecticut Sun and the New York Knicks from 2010 to 2019. She is an eight-time All-Star and three-time Olympian. She has not won a title in the NBA.
