Schefter: Jimmy G would have been traded by now if not for surgery (1:01)

If it weren't for Jimmy Garoppolo's surgery, he would have been traded from the 49ers. There is a time and a place for this.

A source told Jeremy Fowler that Jimmy Garoppolo's timetable for throwing is on schedule.

The plan has been for Garoppolo to throw over the next few weeks after he is cleared to do so.

The trade market for Garoppolo could get hotter once he passes a physical.

While Garoppolo has spent most of his time in Southern California rehabbing, Lance has been the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

Garoppolo was excused from the team's mandatory mini camp in June because he didn't participate in the team's conditioning program. Lance has been the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Sudfeld in the team's Organized Team Activities.

The final season of Garoppolo's contract will count against the salary cap, meaning he will have to pay more. The 49ers have the right to trade him to any team of their choice, if they so choose, because of the no-trade clause.

An acquiring team would take on a $24.2 million salary if it traded for Garoppolo, but that salary is not guaranteed and interested teams can potentially work with him on a contract extension that knocks down the salary number in exchange for guarantees.
