There is a crater on the moon. This one isn't normal.
The impact site of a recent rocket crash on the far side of the moon was spotted by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. On Friday, the space agency published images of the impact, which resulted in a double crater.
It was the first time that space debris unintentionally impacted our satellite when a rocket booster slammed into the moon. The double crater was not what NASA expected.
According to NASA, the double crater was unexpected and may indicate that the rocket body had large mass at each end. The rest of the rocket stage consists of an empty fuel tank. The double nature of the crater could indicate the identity of the rocket body.
The independent astronomer Bill Gray, who tracks objects that travel into Earth's solar system neighborhood, has published evidence that shows the rocket booster is from a Chinese moon mission. The booster is not theirs, says China.
The damage to the moon's surface is not catastrophic, but it underscores a part of humanity's growing space junk problem. The potential for the spent rockets to fall to Earth or possibly get flung out into deeper space is what makes some rocketschaotic.

Humans had already left their mark on the moon. The moon's surface was cratered by rocket boosters from the Apollo missions. There are bags of feces on the moon. The lunar surface was strewn with debris a few years ago.
