Jonathan Garibay is on the Cowboys' 90-man roster.
There is a chance that the Cowboys will add another kicker before they head to California for training camp in July, but the veterans that are available have less chance than Garibay of making the team.
Chris Naggar was released by the Cowboys before the rookies went to mini camp. He did not kick in a football game. They may look to the USFL for help in the kicker battles this summer.
McCarthy smiled when asked what it was like to be a kicker.
His patience is questionable these days.
McCarthy said that it's better than it was in 2007. It was enjoyable.
Crosby made 31 field goal attempts as the Packers made it to the playoffs. In his first game, he hit a 42-yarder to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, but he didn't miss a field goal in the Packers' loss.
Garibay showed a strong leg in the one session that was open to the media. He kicked from 50 yards, but missed from 55 and a 53-yarder. Jake McQuaide and Bryan Anger have experience with snapping.
McCarthy said you can get a sense of his ability. He is off to a great start. He's not old.
Garibay helped Texas Tech become bowl eligible by making a 62-yarder against Iowa State, but Crosby had a better collegiate resume. Last season, it was the longest make in the league. Garibay was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. He tried eight times in 2020.
Garibay said that he always dreamed of moments like that. I live by the saying that if I don't have an opportunity then I'm not ready for it, and if I do have an opportunity then I'm not ready for it. I was excited for the chance to kick the field goal.
Even though the Cowboys finished with a 12-5 record, their kicking situation was not good.

Three of the Cowboys' five losses were decided by less than three points and Greg Zuerlein missed six field goal attempts. He missed at least one kick in each of those games.
The Cowboys were in Zuerlein's corner because they believed he would find his form after having back surgery. They almost re-signed him before he joined the New York Jets, but they decided to move on from his salary.

Garibay said that it meant that they expected a lot from him. I expect a lot from myself. A lot of thinking. The majority of it is mental. There are a lot of great kickers out there that have power and accuracy. Sometimes it is a mental problem. The other 1 percent is most likely mental.
I'm trying to do the same thing I've always done -- focus on myself, not on the competition, and take it one kick at a time. You have to have one for one all the time.
