We are exaggerating when we say that the Louisville community has been shocked by Publix's plan to open stores in the Commonwealth.
Kentucky will get its first taste ofPub Subs and other items from the massive southeastern U.S. grocery chain when the new stores open. The move is still significant for Louisville's grocery scene.
There are a few things to know about the new store in the state of Kentucky. The company broke ground on a project in Louisville.
Get the most important question out of the way first.
According to a September release from the company, the first Louisville store won't open until the fourth quarter of 2023.
The officials broke ground on the NuLu hotel.
The facility will be built on a vacant plot of land in eastern Jefferson County, near the University of Louisville Medical Center Northeast and Mercedes-Benz of Louisville, and on a corner with two other small shopping centers. The property is located in a commercial zone.
A liquor store will be built on-site along with a grocery store.
According to documents filed with Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services, Skilken Gold is behind the project.
The store will occupy more than 50,000 square feet on the 10-acre site, with its facade facing Terra Crossing Boulevard. The filing application shows that the facility will be about 30 feet tall and have a parking lot as well. Renderings of the store haven't been made public.
Property tax rates for all Louisville residents would be lessened under the proposal.
The company announced in December that it will open a second store in Louisville in the first quarter of 2019. A drive-through pharmacy and a liquor store are planned for the supermarket.

The footprint and features of the Louisville locations will be retained.

If you listen to fans of the grocery store, they will tell you that the sub-style sandwiches it serves are among the finest cuisine money can buy. That is a little odd. It's probably a possibility. The announcement was treated like the biggest news of a generation because of those products.

Other local grocery companies have already established a presence in Louisville so the new Publix stores will face a lot of competition.
The city and surrounding region is home to about 40 Kroger and Jay C outlets, and other grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Walmart are also found there. The nearest Kroger store is two miles away on La Grange Road.
The company was founded in Winter Haven in 1930. More than 1,300 stores are located in seven states across the southeast.
