The Supreme Court of the United States voted earlier today, Friday, June 24, 2022 to uphold a ban on abortion in the state of Mississippi and also to overturn what had been considered for almost 50 years the Constitutional right for women to abort their unborn fetuses, stating that “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion” and that “the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.”
The public announcement on the controversial issue was made public by Alaska Airlines.
Our company will continue to provide extensive benefits to our employees no matter where they live. We want the employees of Alaska Airlines andHorizon Air to know that we are committed to making sure they have the healthcare they need.
The Supreme Court of the United States decided to overturn the protections given to them. While the issues at hand are deeply personal, this is a very public event and I am aware that it may generate questions about how Alaska andHorizon provide access to health care through its benefits programs.
I would like to acknowledge the range of emotions that you, our guests and members of our communities may be feeling. Ensuring a safe work environment is part of our culture of care. This is a good time to show understanding, empathy and kindness for each other.
We will continue to give our employees extensive benefits to support their health and well-being no matter where they live. Reimbursing travel for certain medical procedures if they aren't available in your area is included. The Supreme Court decision does not affect that.
Today's news may distract you depending on your experience. We need to remember to focus on running a safe operation. If you can't focus at the level you need, please contact your manager or HR partner. You and your household members can get assistance through our employee assistance program.

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's right to choose to have an abortion. The ruling was overturned by five of the justices.
The ban on abortion after 15 weeks in Mississippi was upheld by six of the nine justices.
As the ability to choose to have an abortion is no longer considered a Constitutional right, the procedure may become illegal in as many as half of the US. Women may need to travel to another state in order to get family planning and reproductive care because other states will likely keep more liberal legislation regarding abortion.
In addition to Alaska Airlines, other companies which are linked to travel, such as The Walt Disney Company, and Condé Nast as three examples, have also announced that they will either cover costs for travel for employees who want to undergo the process of abortion but cannot do so
At the time this article was written, no one knew whether other airlines would follow Alaska Airlines' lead.
Alaska Airlines and the other companies can provide support for their employees as long as it's not illegal. I don't disagree with the official decision of the airline or the other companies.
I am against in no specific order.
It is unlikely that the issue of abortion will ever be solved by eliminating unwanted pregnancies in the first place.
The process for couples who want to have a family but cannot have children naturally should be able to adopt unwanted babies with a streamlined process, as many people over the years have had to travel outside of the United States. In the abortion quagmire, there are two sides who are overly adamant about their views, and sometimes to death.
Regardless of what happens with regard to abortion, one thing is certain: the pro-life versus pro-choice debate is far from over, and travel will play a critical role for many women who seek to undergo abortion.
