There will be a lot of people crossing the state line to get abortions. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn federal abortion protections made the state an abortion sanctuary.

The states were quick to respond. The laws in Kentucky and Missouri effectively banned abortion Friday. During a special session in July, Indiana's Republican governor and legislators are expected to impose new restrictions. After the federal protection for abortion was revoked, abortion clinics across the state canceled appointments, but state officials said they wouldn't enforce the pre-Civil War law. The governor said Friday that she would protect every unborn Iowan, even though abortion is still legal in the state.

The state of Illinois has become an island of abortion access. It is not limited to neighboring states. Every state south of Illinois has at least one plan to restrict abortion.

The head of public policy at the organization told Insider that they expected the influx to begin immediately.

An additional 20,000 to 30,000 patients are expected to cross the state's border to get abortions each year, according to the organization.

The number of patients Illinois clinics take from other states will be tripled. Out-of-state abortions accounted for 20% of all abortions in Illinois in 2020, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

New clinics were opened near the borders of Indiana and Wisconsin in order to be ready for the possible reversal of the Supreme Court's decision. Illinois residents can now get abortion pills via mail. Adding more providers is one of the options it is considering.

It's really hard to know exactly how many people will be coming and where they'll come, so there's no perfect way to plan.

People don't always go to the closest place to get an abortion. Many Texans traveled to Chicago for abortions after Texas banned abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. It was quicker to fly to and from Chicago. Sometimes clinics in Oklahoma were full.

With no federal abortion protections and people flocking to a smaller number of clinics, there may be an impact on how long it will take for you to get an appointment. Illinois is one of the states that still perform abortions.

Many people in other states will have to travel thousands of miles to get an abortion because of the new law.

They have to figure out their own lives after finding a place with an opening. When you can be at work, who can take care of your children? The flight is booked. She asked if she needed to rent a car.

All the patients who can make the journey need more staff and money. The organization called on the state government to provide funding for abortion providers.
