Talk about a great time from the past. The spaceship that helped discover water on Mars has been running on Windows 98 ever since.
The European Space Agency published a press release Tuesday that said the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding is getting a software upgrade. The MARSIS was part of the first ever mission to Mars.
After two decades of service, the team wants to push MARSIS further and make it even more useful.
Carlo Nenna said there were definitely obstacles to overcome.
Nenna said that they faced a number of challenges. The MARSIS software is based on Microsoft Windows 98 and was originally designed over 20 years ago.
The new upgrade will allow MARSIS to stay on for five times longer and peer down at larger areas on the red surface. The new software should be able to confirm whether or not there is water under the south pole.
Colin Wilson said in the statement that it was like having a brand new instrument on board.
We want the new software to have the same startup sound as Windows 98 did.
There is a small chance that you will wake up on Mars tomorrow due to quantum physics.
