We don't know when audiences outside of Japan will be able to see Hideaki Anno and his Shin Godzilla partner Shinji Higuchi's take on Ultraman. We can watch the film over the next few days and be impressed.
To celebrate the film's recent release in Japan, the first 10 minutes of Shin Ultraman have been released online in a limited-time capacity, meaning you have the next 48 hours to watch the introduction of the giant of light himself.
The clip introduces us to a Japan in a state of crisis as kaiju beginwreaking havoc all over the country, leading to the swift founding of the SSSP to contain and study monstrous threats. We quickly learn that what this means is a lot of people in suits sitting around laptops and dealing with layers of government while giant monsters wreak havoc. There is a mix of that nostalgic Tokustatsu imagery and the grounded banality of what are essentially office workers tasked with trying to stop.
Ultraman shows up to beat the snot out of one of the threats in the final moments of the preview. It is very cool to see Ultraman shrugging off the monster's attacks before unleashing a devastating attack of its own. If this is the vibe we get for Shin Ultraman whenever we get to see it outside of Japan, we will be in for a very cool treat.
