According to a memo obtained exclusively by CNBC, one of the largest employers in the U.S. financial industry told workers that it will pay for travel to states that allow legal abortion.

Expansion of medical benefits will begin in July and the news came as part of an internal communication to employees.

Workers will be able to access additional covered benefits in July. Enhancements for lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer workers are included in the changes.

The existing health care travel benefit will be expanded to include all health care services that can only be obtained far from your home.

The Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the US in 1973. Employees in states where the procedure is not allowed will have to travel to places where it is allowed. Citigroup was the only other bank that provided travel benefits for employees.

In a question and answer web page linked to the June 1 memo, the bank directly addressed whether it was covering abortion and out-of-state travel.

The bank asked if they would pay for an employee to travel to another state for an abortion if their state wouldn't allow it.

It's true. Travel benefits have historically been included in health care plans. All services that can only be obtained far from your home will be included in July.

The company has a health plan that covers abortions.
