The NHL is going to launch an NFT program. The league is partnering with Sweet to create a marketplace of digital collectibles that include everything from hockey history to 3D interactive trophy rooms. The marketplace will be launched before next season, but the league made the announcement during NFT. NYC.
One of the more user-friendly NFT marketplaces is Sweet, which allows users to buy stuff with a credit card. There is a lot of sports content in the game, including collectibles from NBA and Formula 1 teams.
It took the NHL a long time to make it. The NBA has Top Shot, the NFL has All Day, the MLB has new digital cards, and so on and so forth.
Top Shot and other marketplaces are a long way from where they used to be.
If there is such a thing, sports are still as sensible a use case as any. The market for trading cards has boomed over the last few years, and people have been collecting them for decades. It remains to be seen if a video of a cool highlight will carry the same long-term value as a near mint condition Mickey Mantle card.
Other leagues have talked about turning tickets into digital assets or creating communities among fans. The other thing was the attempt to buy an NBA team by the DAO. The NHL announcement was relatively straightforward and focused on collectibles. The league wants the winter to end before the hockey season starts.
