The toll is expected to rise after another earthquake struck the eastern paktika province on Friday morning.

The epicenter of the earthquake was almost exactly where the aftershock was detected.

According to Bakhtar News Agency's director-general, Wednesday's disaster left 1, 150 dead, 1,600 injured and thousands of houses destroyed.

According to a spokesman for the Taliban government, the country doesn't have enough medicine to treat everyone who has been affected.

Relief and rescue efforts by the Taliban-led government have been severely impacted by the region's poor roads and lack of other infrastructure, forcing locals to bury the dead themselves and dig through the rubble to find survivors.

The UN Refugee Agency said it has sent in tons of relief items and several expert staff to the affected region.

The earthquake in Afghanistan has made the situation worse. We grieve for all the Afghans who have died. The U.S. is working with humanitarian partners to send medical teams to help those affected.

Key Background

The rising death toll from Wednesday's disaster has only deepened Afghanistan's ongoing humanitarian crisis due to devastating food shortages and economic sanctions against the country's government. The country spiraled into turmoil last year as the Taliban swooped into power in Kabul and the Biden administration oversaw a swift and chaotic withdrawal of US military forces from Afghanistan. The new Taliban rulers were hit with a number of international sanctions, including a decision by President Joe Biden to freeze $7 billion of the Afghan Central Bank's funds. The Afghan government has received aid from other countries in the region. India, which is yet to recognize the Taliban government, sent 27 truckloads of emergency relief to Afghanistan.

Big Number

That's 24 million. According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are currently over one hundred thousand Afghan people in need of humanitarian assistance.
