  • Chickens are being fed with cannabis instead of antibiotics.

  • The experiment is showing positive signs, according to researchers from the university.

  • Consumers looking for organic poultry are paying more for the chickens.

Researchers said the experiment that fed the chickens with cannabis instead of antibiotics yielded promising results.

Less than 10% of the chickens at the farm in Lampang have died since pot was introduced to their diet.

The cannabis feed appears to be working according to the assistant professor who led the study. She said that the mortality rate for the chickens at the farm has been the same as in the regular season.

Cannabis is added to the birds' feed and water to make their special food. During this time, no antibiotics or medicines are given to the chickens.

The experiment has allowed the farm to sell birds for higher prices to people who want organic poultry.

The birds are fetching double the regular price due to the fact that buyers want organic chickens that haven't been administered antibiotics. The chicken's meat is more tender and tastes better than regular chickens, she claimed.

Consumers in Thailand have been paying attention to this because demand for chickens is increasing. Some customers want a safer product.

The farm in Lampang primarily grows cannabis as one of its major products but also keeps chickens.

As part of the experiment, Lumsangkul said her research team would sometimes give the chickens cannabinoid levels that went past the legal limits for humans in Thailand.

The Thai government legalized the sale of cannabis products but limited the amount of the drug in the items one can consume. The chickens at the farm can sometimes get up to 0.4%.

She said that the chickens exhibit normal behavior even though they are high on cannabis.

It's not clear what the full benefits of feeding chickens cannabis are, or why the birds are kept healthy in the first place. She said that it's likely that marijuana has substances that boost the birds' immune systems.

The study has only been a screening test so far and the researchers have yet to test if the cannabis feed works to protect the chickens against bird flu or other severe diseases

There is no way that people can get high from eating chickens that have been fed cannabis. She said that the chicken's form is completely changed when it gets to the table.
