John Williams is 90. He has written music for over 150 movies and several pieces have become so recognizable that people know them even if they haven't watched the film. He is considered to be the greatest composer in the history of cinema, but his career may be nearing an end.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Williams said that he might retire after completing the music for the fifth Indiana Jones movie. Indiana Jones 5 will be Harrison Ford's last film according to Williams. I thought if Harrison can do it, then maybe I can as well. According to the AP, Ford hasn't said that publicly, but Williams did, so we'll focus on that.
At 90, movies can take up to six months of work at a time and that is a bigger chunk of your remaining life than it was decades before. He doesn't like writing music for feature films. It's never a good idea to say never. Williams doesn't want to be seen as eliminating any activity I can't play tennis but I like to think that one day I will.
If you live in the LA area, you can often see the man behind the music at an event. The Hollywood Bowl puts on a lot of Williams music. What used to be a full night of Williams conducting has become half a night. The walk gets a little slower when he comes back for an encore.
This news isn't surprising. The majority of people retire in their 60s or 70's. Fans got at least 20 more years of John Williams film scores than they should have. We might get more. If Indiana Jones 5 is the final one, Williams should get it. He is one of the greatest artists of our time.
Please tell us your favorite Williams scores.
