Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" has climbed up to the top of music charts around the world thanks to the popularity of the fourth season of the show. A lot of Bush's fans feel like younger people are discovering her music for themselves by way of a sci-fi love letter to the '80s. Bush sees the resurgence of interest in running up that hill as a testament to the power of art.

Bush, who generally doesn't speak to the public, opened up about what it was like to watch a new generation turn one of her classics into a present day hit. Bush didn't expect to become involved in the show's lore but the experience has all felt like "the whole world's gone mad."

Bush said that the audience was a whole new one who hadn't heard of him. I think it is very special that so many young people hear the song for the first time and discover it is very special.

In the first half of Stranger Things 4, Max and the other kids discover that the only way to stay safe from Vecna is to listen to their favorite songs. In most cases, Vecna psychically stalks his victims from another dimension before pulling them to him and tearing their bodies apart, but Max is able to break free from his thrall thanks to the cassette of "Running Up That Hill" that's resided in her Walkman all season

Max's obsession with "Running Up That Hill" is part of the series' exploration of how the character is still grieving her brother Billy's death.

Bush wrote "Running Up That Hill" as a love song, but she said that it was a fitting choice for the series as its characters evolve and grow up with its actors.

In those early films that are just little kids, it is lovely. As the film progresses, the little kids become really talented young adult actors. You have a connection with something that has been moving for a long time.

She likes the song "Running Up That Hill" because it's about a man and a woman longing to swap places with one another "just to feel what it was like from the other side."

Bush still thinks of the song as "A Deal with God" but she emphasizes the importance of people being able to take what they want from art. Bush is focused on living in the moment because "Running Up That Hill" is part of the now for others.

Bush said that there was some great music in the ’80s. It's an awful time for many people. It's very hard. It is also a time when amazing things happen. It's pretty overwhelming that technology is progressing so fast. There are many advances in medicine. At the moment, it's hard to find them.
