Before the premiere aired, it was rumored that Obi-Wan's former master, Qui-Gon Jinn, would be in the series. A friend has learned how to live forever. There is a person who has returned from the force. Your mentor. How to get along with him. Obi-Wan lost his connection to the Force and his hope of getting a visit from the Force when the show begins, but he was supposed to be talking to Qui-Gon. After saving Princess Leia and confronting Darth Vader, Obi-Wan's connection to the Force is re-established, allowing the transparent blue form ofQui-Gon to appear in the episode's final moments.

Liam Neeson's reasons for returning to the role he last played in 1999's The Phantom Menace were more than just an easy paycheck. Lucasfilm almost certainly wouldn't have had Qui-Gon show up if Neeson hadn't been involved. It is possible that Lucasfilm could have made a better version of Qui-Gon if the actor had agreed to appear on the show. For his brief appearance in the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he came back that way.
