  • Trump is angry that he doesn't have allies to defend him.

  • Kevin McCarthy boycotted the committee.

  • It was possible for Trump to back a bipartisan commission.

As the House's January 6 committee lays out in devastating detail Donald Trump's effort to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election, the former president is angry at Kevin McCarthy.

The former president told the newsletter that Republicans don't have a voice. They have nothing to say.

He feels that the GOP is doing little to defend him, and that he is avidly and angrily watching the commission hearings.

One of Trump's Republican critics pointed out that Trump was the one who opposed the formation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the riot.

The New York Times quoted a Michigan Republican who voted to impeach Trump as saying that the president opposed the commission. He's changing history again.

In early 2021, the House passed a bill to create a January 6 panel modeled on the 9/11 commission, with the Democrats and Republicans voting in favor. After Trump, congressional GOP leaders, and the far-right congressional Freedom Caucus objected to it, it was blocked.

The 35 Republican representatives were criticized by Trump for ignoring his call to vote against forming a commission.

Republican leaders could have defended Trump using the commission as a platform.

They would have been able to pick five Republicans to sit on the commission and pick a co-chair. If Trump allies were selected for the panel, they could have tried to undermine arguments by Democrats and Trump's detractors.

Nancy Pelosi formed the House commission to investigate the attack after the commission bill was defeated, giving her considerable power to shape the committee.

A damaging case for Trump's guilt has been presented by the Democratic-controlled committee. The testimony of Capitol Police officers who were injured in the riot has been featured.

In July of last year, McCarthy said he wouldn't be selecting any Republicans to take part in the investigation after Pelosi barred two of his choices.

The rules of the committee gave McCarthy no choice but to comply with Pelosi and allow Republicans to sit on the panel or leave the committee. Two Republicans on the January 6 commission are vocal opponents of Trump who have been ostracized by the GOP.

The hearings are inconvenient for Trump.

The findings of the bipartisan commission would have to be presented by the end of 2020. The hearings of the House committee were timed to damage Trump and remind voters of the GOP's role in the riots.
