The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health are investigating a large outbreak of meningococcal disease.

According to the CDC, meningococcal disease can be very serious. The number of cases of Meningitis in Florida have exceeded the five-year average so far this year.

The outbreak is disproportionately affecting men of the same sexual orientation. People living with HIV are more likely to be college students.

At least 24 cases and 7 deaths have been reported.

The Florida Department of Health wants people to get vaccinations against meningococcal disease.

Men who have sex with men should get a meningococcal vaccine if they live in Florida, according to the CDC. The importance of MenACWY vaccine for people with HIV has been emphasized.

During the MenACWY outbreak, anyone can get a vaccine for free.

Meningitis Versus Meningococcal Disease: There IS a Difference

Meningococcal disease isn't always a sign that you have the disease. It doesn't mean you have Meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease is a disease caused by a type ofbacteria called Neisseria meningitidis, according to the CDC. Meningitis and bloodstream infections are included in these illnesses.

Bacterial Meningitis

It is a serious disease. Death can occur in a few hours for some people with the infections. People recover from the disease. Permanent disabilities can include brain damage, hearing loss, and learning disabilities.

The germs that causebacterial Meningitis can be spread from person to person. Food can be contaminated with certain germs. Depending on the type ofbacteria, how people spread the germs can be different. People spread different types ofbacteria to each other.

Viral Meningitis

Meningitis can be caused by a Viruses, is the most common type of Meningitis. People are better on their own. Any type of meningitis can be serious and anyone with symptoms should see a doctor immediately.

People can spread the diseases to others. If you are in close contact with someone who is sick, you may be at risk of contracting the disease. You're not likely to get Meningitis. People who are exposed to these Viruses will not develop Meningitis.

Fungal Meningitis

There is a chance that a disease can spread from the body to the brain or spine.

Parasitic Meningitis

The brain and nervous system can be affected by various parasites. The incidence of parasites is less than the incidence of viral andbacterial infections.

Amebic Meningitis

A rare brain disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis is caused by a single-celled living organisms that is too small to be seen with a microscope.

Infections have been reported to the CDC in the U.S. from 1962 to 2019.

Symptoms

Symptoms can include a high temperature, headaches, nausea, and a dark purple rash. The symptoms of a flu-like illness can first appear. Respiratory and throat secretions can be shared by people.

It takes close or long contact, such as kissing or being near someone coughing, to spread thesebacteria.
