Two people with knowledge of the decision say that Murdoch and Hall are divorcing. People would only talk about a personal matter.

A spokesman for Mr. Murdoch wouldn't say anything. Representatives for Ms. Hall weren't available for comment.

The ownership structure of businesses that Mr. Murdoch holds stakes in is not likely to be altered by his divorce. A strictly managed trust holds Mr. Murdoch's shares in the companies he founded. Mr. Murdoch splits his voting rights with his four oldest children so that he can't be outvoted.

His business empire, which includes the Fox News Channel, The Sun in Britain and Sky News in Australia, could be affected by the split.

In the early days of the marriage, aides and people close to the family said he was happily devoting more time to his new wife, leaving room for his children to assert themselves at the top of the corporate hierarchy.

People close to Mr. Murdoch were surprised to hear of his divorce.

Mr. Murdoch and Ms. Hall were married in central London in March of last year. Mr. Murdoch used the occasion to announce that he would stop posting on the platform.

The October-December pair of Ms. Hall and Mr. Murdoch became the subject of rival tabloids, with the two smiling broadly on a pristine beach or at a black-tie opening.

One attendee said that Ms. Hall attended Mr. Murdoch's 90th birthday party at Tavern on the Green. The person said that Ms. Hall didted on Mr. Murdoch during the celebrations.

Mr. Murdoch was married to Wendi Deng for a number of years. After more than 30 years of marriage, he divorced his second wife, Anna. The first wife of Mr. Murdoch was an Australian model.

The marriage of Ms. Hall to Mick Jagger was null and void in 1999.
