A large earthquake near the city of Khst in south-eastern Afghanistan has killed over a thousand people and injured hundreds.

More than a thousand people have been killed in an earthquake in Afghanistan.

The US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the south-eastern city of Khst.

More than 600 people have been injured and at least 960 have died. An emergency meeting was held to coordinate the response to the situation, according to a Taliban spokesman.

There is an active fault line in the east where the Indian plate moves northward and collides with the Eurasian plate. The event was felt in the capital of Afghanistan.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society was reported to be on the ground to help people affected by the disaster. The UK government stands ready to support Afghanistan, according to a UK diplomat.
