Uvalde's school district police chief Pete Arredondo was denied a leave of absence from his city council position after members of the community lined up to criticize him.

The grandmother of a 10-year-old girl who was shot by Arredondo begged the council to remove him from his job.

She said that he shouldn't be on an administrative leave with pay.

The Uvalde Leader- News reported that Arredondo was elected to the council on March 2. A week after the shooting, he was sworn in.

Police officers have criticized his leadership.

The police chief was subpoenaed to testify before a Texas House committee in private, but he chose not to.

Arredondo told The Texas Tribune that he didn't think he was in charge of the mass-shooting response.
