An airman based in the U.S. was taken into custody Thursday and is currently in pre-trial confinement while awaiting a hearing to determine if he will be charged.

The military said a US service member was a possible suspect in the April attack on the Green Village base.

The service members had traumatic brain injuries.

The airman has not been named or charged, and his alleged motive is not clear.

Some of the roughly 900 American personnel stationed in eastern Syria to support the Syrian Democratic Force are at Green Village. Despite the fact that the Islamic State has virtually no remaining territory, it is still possible to fight against it. Iran-backed militias that helped Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cling to power are active in the country's east, and the Turkish military is present in parts of northern Syria. The April attack on Green Village was initially thought to be an instance of indirect fire by one of the militia groups backed by Iran.
