Butterscotch, Starburst, Holocake 2, and mirror lake are not military codewords.
Instead, they're the names of four newly-unveiled, purportedly advanced virtual reality headset prototypes by Meta Reality Labs.
This is an alleged milestone for a project that is already billions of dollars in the making and that plays a central role in the company.
"I think we're in the middle right now of a big step forward towards realism," said Mark Zuckerberg in one of the videos accompanying the round table event. It won't be that long until we can create scenes with perfect fidelity.
Each prototype was created with the goal of mastering a different visual challenge they believe is keeping existing virtual reality from being seen as real by human visual systems: the ability to focus on any depth, getting rid of lens distortion, achieving.
The four concepts must be combined to bring their vision to life. The headsets have to be comfortable and that presents a huge challenge.
"We need to build an unprecedented type of virtual reality display system in order to get there," he said. A lightweight display that is so advanced it can deliver what our eyes need to function naturally so they perceive we are looking at the real world in virtual reality
While none of these prototypes pass the "visual Turing Test" that Meta Reality Labs calls a "visual Turing Test", they may bring the company closer to the goal of seamless integration of extended reality systems into daily life.
There is still a lot that Silicon Valley needs to figure out before these products are going to pick up.
Facebook says it's not building a metaverse after all.
