How shocking is Gronk's retirement? (1:23)

Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from the NFL. There is a time and a place for it.

4:42 PM ET

The future Hall of Famer decided to call it quits Tuesday, two years after he came out of retirement to join quarterback Tom Brady.

If Brady asked him to come back to the team, Drew said he wouldn't do it, but he wouldn't let the team down.

With O.J. Howard leaving in free agency, the Bucs have only one experienced tight end in CAMERON BRATE who plays the "F" role and is mostly a pass catcher. Codey McElroy was an "F" who had a strong spring, but he has played in just one regular-season game and is still learning how to use his big frame as a blocker.

The University of Washington's Cade Otton and the University of Iowa's Ko Kieft were selected by the Bucs in the fourth and sixth rounds, respectively, in the NBA draft. Otton is still recovering from ankle surgery, so he did not participate in the minicamp or mandatory minicamp. Kieft is a blocker but will be limited as a route runner as he ran a forty yard dash in under five seconds.

If they want to keep Brady throwing to tight ends, they need help at this position. The Bucs attempted more passes to tight ends over the past two years than any other team. Over the past two seasons, they attempted 38 times to get their tight ends in the end zone.

Among the capable free-agent options are Eric Ebron, Jimmy Graham, Kyle Rudolph, andJared Cook. The roster management system shows the salary cap space for the Bucs. Ebron, Graham, Cook, and Rudolph are all older than 30.

Cook had 564 receiving yards, four touchdown and 31 first downs in 16 regular-season games last season, but he also had five dropped balls. While Graham had only 167 receiving yards in 11 games, he scored three touchdown for the Chicago Bears and had 257 yards and a touchdown in 15 games.

Ebron was placed on injured reserve because of a right knee injury that required surgery. He has been cleared to return to normal activities. He had 56 catches for 558 receiving yards and five touchdown in 2020 for the Pittsburgh. Cook had seven touchdown passes in 2020.

Brady will report to training camp in five weeks for what could be his last season after he retired for 40 days earlier this spring.

Brady said last year, "So much about football is anticipating what the problems will be, as opposed to figuring out how to solve the problem after the play." A lot of it is figuring out the problem before it happens. He knows what I'm thinking and he knows what I'm thinking. We've been doing it for a long time. It's great. It's a great benefit for two position players that have been with each other for a long time.

Gronk's contributions on the field won't be the end of the world. He provided experience as a four-time Super Bowl winner, but his practice demeanor elevated the mood of those around him, as he found a way to still work hard but keep things light and fun, with a knack for identifying when a teammate or coach needed a boost

Brady said in a post that the person he was off the field was more important. He was focused when he had to be. Every football player dreams of having Gronk in their locker room.

It made its way into the community. In his first year with the team, he replaced $15,000 worth of football equipment and a storage shed that was destroyed in a fire at a high school in Florida.

"I don't think he's ever had a bad day, to be honest with you" He is having fun all the time. We refer to him as 'Old Gronkitis'. There is a disease called gronkitis. He has a good time. He enjoys the game of football and the work he puts in is serious. He sees the world differently than he sees football.
