One of the largest financial service providers in the US, Flagstar Bank, has notified more than 1.5 million customers of a data breach in which Social Security numbers were stolen.

In a letter sent to those affected, Michigan-headquartered Flagstar revealed that it had been hacked. The bank discovered that threat actors accessed customer details after an investigation.

The company said in the letter that it experienced a cyber incident. We immediately activated our incident response plan, engaged external cybersecurity professionals experienced in handling these types of incidents, and reported the incident to federal law enforcement.

It is not known why Flagstar took so long to find the data breach. Susan Bergesen, a spokeswoman for Flagstar, refused to answer our questions about which of its systems were compromised and how many customers were affected.

More than one million people in the United States were affected by the data breach.

This isn't the first time that flagstar has been compromised. The company became a victim of the hack in January of 2021. The data included names, Social Security numbers, addresses, tax records, and phone numbers.

Morgan Stanley, Qualys, and Kroger have all been linked to the Clop Ransomware gang.
