Cole will continue to be the best active major league pitcher without a no-hitter after a seven-inning performance in the New York Yankees 4-2 win over the Tampa BayRays on Monday night.
The Yankees are tied with the 1998 club for the third best 67-game start in franchise history.
Cole, trying to become the 13th pitcher to throw a no-hitter in pinstripes, allowed only three base runners through seven frames before infielder Isaac Paredes' sharp grounder up the middle in the eighth put an end to the longest no-hit bid of Cole'
I thought I had good things. Cole said he couldn't tell you what no-hit stuff looked like because he had never thrown a no-hitter. I had a few good nights in the past. I'm glad we won.
Cole struck out a season-high 12 times. It was Cole's sixth career game with 12 strikeouts for the Yankees, making him the only other pitcher in franchise history with as many 12 strikeouts.
Cole's pitch was praised by the manager and catcher.
He just got in a rhythm with his Slider. He was in charge. I thought his pitch was good, but he had a really good one tonight. There was a difference in the level of the sliders. They made him work a little bit so the pitch count was getting up there and I think he was gassed by the end.
The way he prepares, the way he comes out, the way he just performs, it's amazing. Since I've been here, I've been nothing but impressed with Cole, who has pitched to a 0.93 earned run average in three starts against the Rays this season after posting a 5.05 in his previous seven.
Cole didn't record a decision after the Rays scored two runs in the eighth to make it a tie game, which ended a franchise-record streak of 29 appearances without allowing a run. It was the longest streak by a pinstriper. It was the longest active streak in the majors at 3113 and it ended.

Cole's seventh win of the season was more disappointing than the fact that they didn't hold onto the lead. He is surprised that Cole hasn't registered a no-hitter in his 10 seasons in the majors.
His numbers are insane. The advanced stat number is still great for him. I think he's going to get it someday. He was close to being killed. He definitely deserved a bit of accomplishment for what he did tonight, even though we gave up a run to get him off the hook.
The Yankees went on to score two runs in the ninth, with Josh Donaldson singling to left with one out, and the ball going to right for a double, and both going on to score.
In June, the Yankees haven't lost back-to-back games yet, and their last two-game losing streak came against the same team in the same division.
