Millions of Americans continue to face pain at the pump as President Biden ponders the possibility of a gas tax holiday.

Biden told reporters in Delaware that he hopes to make a decision by the end of the week.

Pausing the federal gas tax would have to be done by congress. Lawmakers haven't made much headway on the idea of shelving the tax, despite a pair of Democratic senators introducing legislation in February.

Gas prices have gone up for months due to factors like a US ban on Russian oil imports and a mismatch between supply and demand. The national average for gas was under $5 per gallon.

In an interview on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, the treasury secretary said a federal gas tax holiday is worth considering. In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, Energy Secretary Granholm said that the idea is being considered.

The gas tax funding the roads is part of the challenge.

Georgia and Maryland suspended their gas taxes in March when the price per gallon was increasing.

Biden said he might send Americans gas rebate cards.
