After the Labor Day holiday weekend, American Airlines will no longer serve three cities due to staffing shortages, marking the latest hiccup for the airline industry, which has seen thousands of canceled and slashed flights in recent months.

The company will be dropping service to Toledo, Ohio; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Islip, N.Y., in September due to a shortage of pilots.

We are grateful for the care and service our team members provided to our customers in Islip, Ithaca and Toledo, and are working closely with them during this time. Customers scheduled to travel after this date will be reached to offer alternate arrangements.

Large numbers of Americans are taking trips for the first time since the beginning of the Pandemic. The number of people screened at airports on Friday was more than any other day in the last year.

Airlines struggled to keep up with rising demand after they lost millions of jobs at the peak of the Pandemic.

This past weekend, thousands of flights were canceled or delayed.

In order to reduce the number of canceled flights, Delta Air Lines cut 100 flights from its daily schedule between July 1 and August 7.

The airlines have reduced their schedules. Southwest Airlines cut 20,000 flights this summer.

The changes to the other routes are to better match the current demand environment. One of the airline's hub airports is included in all of the routes.

According to the Air Line Pilots Association, three regional carriers wholly owned by American have recently announced contract agreements that include significant pay increases as part of efforts to attract and retain pilots.

PSA Airlines, which operates 800 daily flights for American, will give its pilots a 50 percent pay raise.

The chair of the PSA pilot group said in a statement that the new PSA agreements will help PSA hire and retain quality pilots.
