A lot of long-loved characters are expected to return in the final season of Star Trek. The original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation was going to show up in the third season. Terry Matalas teased more characters from the show.
Matalas had a lot to say about the final season of the show as first noticed by Trek Core. There are teases about some as-yet-un announced returns.
“There are some people from ‘Star Trek’ who come back in this season who aren’t the ‘Next Gen’ [primary] cast. I mean there’s one character who is in ‘Next Gen’ who I was like… I really want THIS character to come back.
And when they did [agree to return], that was weirdly more thrilling than everything else in totality.”
It would be fun to see Ro Laren and Diana Muldaur return in a new adventure. Matalas confirmed that Colm Meany's Miles O'Brien won't be one of them, as well as other characters from the first season. That makes them out of luck.
Matalas talked about the overall arcs of the coming season, as well as teasing more appearances that should have fans excited. He said it would be a passing of the torch from one generation to the next.
“I mean there’s one character who is in ‘Next Gen’ who I was like… I really want THIS character to come back.”
The most exciting thing is that Picard finally addresses the erasure of Beverly Crusher from the last two seasons. If you don't know, the Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise was also a significant friend and love interest for Picard. One future imagined them as married and then divorced. Even though the show has repeatedly asked Picard to reckon with the pathetic state of his love life, she hasn't been mentioned yet. Matalas wants the actress who plays Gates McFadden to have a very strong story for the last season.
The third season of Picard is currently in production and will eventually air on Paramount+, but I expect the last season of the original cast to come soon.
