The San Diego Padres third baseman left the game against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday due to a left ankle injury.
His leg turned awkwardly as he ran to first base in the top of the first. As he was helped off the field, he was struggling to put weight on his ankle. X-rays came back negative for a serious ankle injury.
He tried to beat the throw from Senzatela by stretching his left leg. He fell to the ground after his cleat slipped across the top of the bag. The third baseman was in pain and clasped his hands around his leg. The throw beat him by a half step.
The Padres took the field in the bottom of the first at Colorado's Coors Field with a new third baseman in place of the old one.
As the Padres battle the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West, Machado has been a force at the plate, leading San Diego in most offensive categories.
Heading into Sunday's game, he was top on the Padres in batting average, home runs and hits. The Padres began Sunday a half-game behind the Dodgers after going 24-13 on the road.
