The new circuit will apply for official world golf ranking points on Monday.
After working closely with the OWGR technical committee to understand the process, Norman said that the LIV Golf invitational series has a very compelling application.
During an interview with Fox News on Saturday night, Norman asked if the PGA Tour commissioner would not vote on the application.
Norman said that it would be interesting to see if Jay Monahan would step down from the vote because of what he said on TV. It's sad that we have to put that extra pressure on ourselves because our tour is a great tour. It has an incredible field. Everything else will take care of itself if we get the OWGR points.
During the final round of the Canadian Open on June 12th, Monahan defended his position on suspending 17 players who have defected from the Tour to join LIV Golf, which is being financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
The field for LIV Golf's next event is expected to include more than one PGA Tour player. Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon, will be the first place in the US where it will be played.
The players who competed without a conflicting event release would be the same as the 17 who were suspended.
Why do we need so much? On CBS Sports, the man asked about the tour. The players signed multiyear lucrative contracts to play in a series of exhibitions against the same players over and over again. That's the reason they need us so much. Pure competition is what you've got. The best players in the world are here at the Canadian Open, with millions of fans watching, and it's true and pure competition that creates a profile in the presence of the world's greatest players.
That is the reason they need us. We do that. The best players in the world will not be allowed to ride off into the sunset.
Other members of the board of governors include the chief executive of the R&A and the executive director of the Augusta National Golf Club.
OWGR points will not be earned by players who aren't eligible to play on other tours. Exemptions for golf's biggest events are determined by the OWGR.
The USGA allowed LIV Golf players who had already qualified for this week's tournament at The Country Club to stay in the field, even though Whan said earlier this week that he could see a day when it would be more difficult for them to do so. The players are still able to get into the U.S. Open.
Whan could see a day. I don't know what that day will look like. I do not. LIV Golf was different two years ago and it was different two months ago. We've been doing this for 127 years and the USGA needs to take a long-term view of this. We are not going to be reactionary to what we do.
If LIV Golf became a recognized tour, it would receive less points because of its current format. There are 54 holes in the LIV golf events and 72 holes in the PGA tour events.
During the interview on Fox News, Norman asked why the PGA Tour was so critical of LIV Golf when it also had sponsors who have done business with Saudi Arabia.
Norman said he was disappointed people went down that path. If they want to look at it in a different way, why does the PGA Tour have so many sponsors doing business with Saudi Arabia? Is it okay for the sponsors? Will Jay Monahan go to the CEOs of the companies that are investing into Saudi Arabia and ban them? It's so loud that the hypocrisy is present. The noise is deafening.
