Gomez sees hope for the USMNT after England get smashed (0:42)

England being exposed by Hungary can be good news for the USMNT. There is a time and a place.

12:00 PM ET

The game had already descended into chaos when Tyler Adams came late to a ball in the second half. Paul Arriola was sent off for a questionable slide tackle and El Salvador had been doing everything it could to hold onto the lead.

Darwin Ceren did not try to get the ball back when he shielded it. Adams earned a yellow card for dragging Ceren down to the mud. The opportunity to try to wind down the clock was obvious for El Salvadoran. The game resumed after the referee calmed the situation down.

Adams beamed when asked about the peak of the game a few hours later.

Adams took someone out and then Weston and Christian took someone else out. It's just the two of them. We support one another up. It's great to have guys like that on the team, and it's even better to have everyone on the team. There isn't one person on our team who is going to stay away. Everyone is supporting one another.

The U.S. salvaged a draw on a last-minute goal from Jordan Morris, but the fracas might have been the most important part of the match. A fighting spirit still emerged from the team that was playing on the road in terrible conditions.

"After the game, he said that he was very happy that we had that emotional capacity to our game and that aspect of the game, because in the biggest games you need to be behind each other," Adams said. You have to make sure that when someone gets stuck in or something like that, you're there, or if someone gets a foul. Those are important times.

During the past three weeks, the team has shared some important information. From an on-field standpoint, but also off the field. The team's time together was reduced due to strict COVID-19 procedures. Being restricted to a team bubble was draining and there was joy at times but not always.

I was wondering when I could leave camp and get back to normal life. Adams made a statement.

The camp was not the same as before. The players could leave their hotels whenever they wanted. They found more ways to bond. Family and friends could come. The factors made a change.

When it's training, you can just relax and turn off. After that, we were able to replenish ourselves in our own way, and that was shown in the games. Every time we trained, you felt the freshness in the team.

The group loves being around each other. It doesn't feel right when you're forced to do that. It was important for the guys that it felt natural again.

The four-game window included mostly positive on-field performances, but it's hard to say what impact the return to normal had on the team. The U.S. was able to dictate a game against a quality opponent. The Uruguay side showed that even a mix-and-match backline could stand tall, even against a very good team.

The team's single-game goal record of four was equaled by Jesus Ferreira and Luca de la Torre, both of whom are on the World Cup squad.

De la Torre is carving out his role and fitting in nicely to what we are doing. Whether that is a starter or a guy that can come in and impact the game from an offensive standpoint. Luca had a great camp. He picked up and performed well after a disappointing end to his season.

The team was in good spirits after Tuesday's game as it prepares to leave. While the Major League Soccer players return immediately to their clubs, the European-based players have a shortened off time before they report to their clubs.

It's not as long as I would like, but I love coming here and playing for my country. When camp is over, it's nice to get to know guys, but you miss them. You are looking forward to coming back to camp because of the great vibes.

How the transfer market could dictate Berhalter's squad

Berhalter wants to give himself and the players an opportunity to relax. The team won't meet again until September, but that doesn't mean the next few months won't be crucial for World Cup preparation.

Multiple players are in different degrees of uncertainty with their club teams, and as much as that matters, those situations will be magnified in the upcoming window. With only two international games between now and the World Cup, club form will be more important than it has been in the past.

The first high-profile move was the transfer from FC Salzburg in Austria to Leeds United in the English premier league. There might be little movement at all.

Adams is a player who might benefit from a change of scenery after seeing his playing time decrease. At a point in his career when he wants to be able to contribute while continuing to develop, he isn't wedded to the idea that it has to be with his hometown club.

There's a beautiful game here. You can watch tournaments and teams.

Is it a good time to leave? We'll see, that's what Adams said. It needs to be the right plan, the right structure, and the right team for me. There are a lot of factors involved. I'll take it if I'm given a good chance. I'm not rushed to say, "Oh, I'm ready to leave" or anything like that.

Football is fascinating." Coming into to the season, I wanted to have more of a sense of order. I didn't have a lot of opportunities towards the end of the season because I was playing every game at the beginning. I was happy that my performances were still good. When I had the opportunities, I was still playing well. I was proud of winning a trophy.

Adams was quick to shoot down the idea that their relationship would be an outsized factor when asked about a possible reunion with Jesse Marsch.

I'm very familiar with Jesse. Adams said that he doesn't know if it makes sense to move there just because he is there. I'm focused on what my coach wants me to do, and I want to become a better player. I fit in with their style of play.

According to De la Torre, he has an agreement with Heracles Almelo to join them in the summer. Some people have said that the possibility is possible.

Horvath said his priority was to play consistently after being a backup for several seasons. It's not clear if that comes at newly promotedNottingham Forest in the premier league. Horvath's path to the starting role may be blocked by the club's interest in bringing in Dean Henderson from Manchester United.

The USMNT player will be looking to impress the coach.

"I don't know what will happen," Horvath said, "but I think my and everyone's main focus going into these last couple months is playing time and getting as many games as possible."

It's likely that of the four goalkeepers Berhalter has called into camp, only one will be the No. He could be looking at a monthlong gap between his last game and the start of the World Cup if NYCFC bow out early. Berhalter is in a difficult position.

Horvath said that playing time is important for himself and everyone else. At the same time, we're all at good clubs, we're all training at very high levels, but I would assume playing time will be a deciding factor.

To have both of them playing at a high level in the fall would represent a major boost for the team's chances at progressing out of the group Depending on how preseason goes for each player, it's possible that they could move away from either of the two teams.

Chris Richards is one of the most intriguing players to watch. After spending the past season and a half on loan at TSG Hoffenheim, he is going to return to his former club to compete for a role in the preseason. It might not be ideal to go back to the old place. If one of the best clubs in the world believes he's worthy of a roster spot and some kind of role, but if that role isn't getting him consistent playing time, that could hamper his chances at earning a starting job at a position

Richards was one of five people who weren't with the team in June for different reasons. Dest should return to the starting lineup immediately.

After getting hurt in the first match of qualification and missing most of the season, his role is to be determined, even though he was one of the first players on the team sheet on the right wing. His slaloming run at the Azteca against Mexico was the best display of skill by a U.S. player in the past year.

Adams said that Gio is a top player when he is fit. He had these nagging injuries throughout his career, even though the start of his season was abrupt. I'm happy that he's coming to an end, but when he's healthy and in our team, he makes a big difference.

These are good issues to have. The United States may need to choose between multiple players playing in the best league in the world at multiple positions. No one should expect the health issues that have plagued the team to go away with the World Cup around the corner. There is a sense of inevitability that not everyone will be fit in time for the season.

We are coming out of the window in a positive way. "We still have work to do to get World Cup-Ready, and we're going to use the September window to finalize things, but excited to see what this group can do at the World Cup"

There is a wait.
