Four non-scientific buildings at the Kitt Peak National Observatory were lost in a wildfire, but early indications show other buildings on the property did not appear to have been damaged.

The telescope and science buildings at the observatory were undamaged by the fire, though a closer examination of the site hadn't yet been made due to safety concerns.

The most threatening fire I have seen at Kitt Peak in the last 25 years is this one.

There was a fire at the observatory Friday. If there was safe entry into the area, crews would be able to assess the damage later Saturday.

The Kitt Peak National Observatory is run by NOIRLab. The University of Arizona has had a telescope at the site for over 50 years.

The lightning-caused fire grew to 27 square miles by Saturday. The fire started on a ridge on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation and was not contained.

In northern New Mexico, authorities who are concerned about the threat of post-wildfire floods as the state enters monsoon season have warned residents to be ready to evacuate, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

A fire that started two months ago has burned 533 square miles, making it the largest area facing flooding threats. There is a fire.

The immediate threat has passed to communities near St. Mary's from a fire that by Saturday had grown to over 500 square miles.
