George Conway, a conservative attorney, said Saturday that former President Donald Trump admitted he was involved in an illegal campaign to overturn the election.
In a two-hour speech at the "Faith and Freedom" conference on Friday, Trump talked about trying to get Mike Pence to reject electoral votes cast for Joe Biden.
Trump told the crowd that if they did this, they would be like Thomas Jefferson. After it all went down, I looked at him and said, "Mike, I hate to say this, but you're no Thomas Jefferson."
It was Trump's first speech since the hearings about last year's insurrection.
"From a prosecutor's point of view, let him keep talking," she said. He admitted that he put pressure on Mike Pence to do something that was not legal.
The husband of a former Trump adviser said that someone should tell him that he has the right to remain silent.
If he is re-elected, Trump said he would consider granting pardons to people who are in jail. If he had that power now, that could be seen as an attempt at tampering with witnesses.
He did that a few years ago.
The people arrested after the insurrection are being treated worse than terrorists and murderers, according to Trump.
He said that the violence at the Capitol was a simple protest that got out of hand, and that most rioters have been charged with nothing more than "parading through the Capitol."
According to the Department of Justice, the defendants have been charged with assault, causing serious bodily injury to police officers, destruction of property, theft, conspiracy and seditious conspiracy. Rioters caused $3 million in losses, including property damage, and 140 police officers were hurt in the violence. More than 800 people have been taken into custody.
Trump has been accused of scheming to overturn a legitimate presidential election. He understood, but he didn't pay attention.
